What is OmegaMax™
The omega-3 your pet can't make alone
OmegaMax™ is a daily omega-3 supplement for dogs and cats of every age from 8 weeks, pumped straight onto food. It supplies EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), the two long-chain omega-3 fatty acids pets can't make in useful amounts and must eat every day.

The science behind the ingredients
In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 74 dogs with osteoarthritis, 84 days of EPA and DHA significantly reduced pain, lameness and joint discomfort (Mehler et al., Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids, 2016).
Omega-3 supplementation lowered triglycerides and cholesterol in Schnauzers with high blood fats (de Albuquerque et al., PLoS ONE, 2021). Fish oil protected kidney function in dogs with reduced renal mass (Brown et al., Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine, 1998).

Wild-caught, not farmed
Most salmon oil is a by-product of salmon farming. A farmed fish can only be as rich in omega-3 as its feed. Farms now feed salmon pellets made mostly from plant ingredients such as rapeseed oil and soy. Plants contain no EPA or DHA, so the salmon carry less of it. In farmed Scottish salmon, EPA and DHA in the flesh roughly halved between 2006 and 2015 (Sprague et al., Scientific Reports, 2016). OmegaMax™ comes from wild-caught anchovy, sardine, herring and mackerel.

Many salmon oil labels don't state EPA and DHA per ml, so you can't work out what your pet gets. Every 2 ml pump of OmegaMax™ declares 324 mg EPA and 214 mg DHA: 538 mg combined.

Dogs with osteoarthritis, including osteoarthritis caused by hip dysplasia, use higher amounts of EPA and DHA. Each 2 ml pump of OmegaMax™ delivers 538 mg.

The advanced amounts come from the Colorado State University (CSU) Veterinary Health System fish oil chart, which sets a daily maximum of 310 mg of combined EPA and DHA per kg of metabolic body weight (kg0.75) for dogs with osteoarthritis, based on Bauer 2011 (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association). The chart counts EPA and DHA only, never total fish oil or total omega-3.
The OmegaMax™ label states: "Do not exceed the recommended daily serving unless directed by a veterinarian."
How to introduce advanced amounts
- Start at the maintenance serving.
- Increase over 5 to 7 days to avoid loose stools.
- Split the daily amount between meals above 4 pumps a day.
- Check with your vet first if your dog has a bleeding disorder or takes anticoagulant medication.
Why hip dysplasia needs more omega-3
Hip dysplasia leads to secondary osteoarthritis. The pain comes from inflammation inside the joint capsule. EPA and DHA reduce inflammatory prostaglandins, support cartilage metabolism, improve weight-bearing comfort and restore flexibility. Omega-3 controls the inflammation but does not tighten a loose joint. Results are best alongside weight management and controlled exercise.

EPA and DHA, explained
EPA and DHA are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found mainly in marine fish oil. They are active regulators, not optional extras.
EPA calms inflammation
EPA is the anti-inflammatory workhorse. It switches down the inflammatory signals (eicosanoids and cytokines) behind itchy skin, stiff joints and chronic discomfort.
DHA builds cells
DHA is a structural fat. It builds the membranes of brain, nerve and retinal cells, supporting learning, vision and normal neurological function.
Why pets can't make their own
Dogs and cats can't make enough EPA and DHA themselves. Building them from plant omega-3 (ALA, from flax or chia) takes an enzyme chain led by delta-6-desaturase, the enzyme that starts converting short-chain omega-3 into long-chain forms. Cats have very little of it. Dogs convert ALA into EPA slowly and into DHA barely at all (Bauer, JAVMA, 2011).
Omega-6 makes it worse. Omega-6 fats compete for the same enzymes, so an omega-6-heavy diet suppresses what little conversion happens. Pets need EPA and DHA ready-made. Marine fish oil supplies them in their active form.
Omega-3 vs omega-6: the balance that matters
Pets need both, in balance. Omega-6 (from poultry fat, seed oils and most commercial pet food) keeps skin and immune function normal, but in excess it drives inflammation. Omega-3 EPA and DHA counterbalance it. Modern pet diets carry far more omega-6 than omega-3, so inflammation starts easily and settles slowly. Your pet doesn't need less omega-6. They need enough omega-3 to balance it.
Signs your pet needs more omega-3
Omega-3 deficiency builds slowly, so it's easy to miss. Look for:
- Skin and coat: dry, itchy skin, dandruff, a dull or brittle coat, heavy shedding, recurring redness
- Joints: stiffness, slow warm-up, reluctance to exercise, slow recovery after activity or injury
- Brain and eyes: reduced focus, cognitive decline in seniors, poor visual development in puppies and kittens
- Immune system: stronger reactions to environmental triggers and a weaker skin and gut barrier

Yes. Fish oil works through daily use: EPA and DHA build up in cell membranes over weeks, so consistent dosing gives consistent results. Dose by weight from the table above.
How long does OmegaMax™ take to work?
Allow 12 weeks for full joint results. The 2016 osteoarthritis trial measured its improvements at day 84 (Mehler et al.). Some pet parents see changes sooner: Susan saw a massive improvement in her Yorkie's dry eye about 2 weeks after starting.
Is OmegaMax™ safe for cats?
Yes. Cats from 8 weeks take half a pump (1 ml) a day in the 0 to 10 kg band. Cats need pre-formed EPA and DHA more than dogs because they make almost none themselves.
