Collagen is the most abundant protein in a horse's body. The entire body depends on collagen for its structural strength and functioning. Collagen and calcium are essential components of healthy bones. Bone health and strength are associated with an active life. Unfortunately, a horse's ability to produce collagen naturally declines with age.

Collagen makes up 30% of a horse's total structural proteins and 70% - 80% of the protein in the skin. Collagen is the "glue" that holds everything together, it supports the integrity of a horse's muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, digestive tract, blood vessels and skin and is essential for many functions:
Promote digestive health by increasing stomach acid and attracting and holding fluids, including digestive juices in a horse’s gut
Restore and maintain optimal gut health

When a horse is young, its body produces substantial amounts of collagen. As vital as collagen protein is to a horse's vitality and well-being its body's capacity to produce it declines with age. Collagen depletion is a natural part of every animal's ageing process and results in visible and degenerative signs of ageing. Lost collagen results in deteriorating bone health which can cause mobility issues, discomfort, pain and a whole host of other comorbidities including autoimmune disorders. In older animals, the daily intake of protein can be suboptimal and contribute to joint stiffness, arthritis and osteoporosis, a condition where bone mineral density is low. Low bone mineral density (BMD) is associated with bone instability, weakness, discomfort and increased fracture risks, commonly in the spine, shoulder and hip.

The good news is depleted or lost collagen can easily be replaced. The sooner a horse's collagen levels are replenished with the building blocks its body needs, the sooner it can help a horse offset some of the degenerative effects of ageing.

Type I collagen represents 90% of organic bone mass. Bones comprise living and dead cells embedded in the extracellular matrix that makes up the skeleton. These cells are continually remodelling or turning over to build new bone. Bones are essentially brittle; their collagen protein gives bones flexibility and tensile strength, joint function, comfort and mobility. Like other connective tissue, bone is metabolically active throughout life. Bone health becomes vitally important with increased age as the balance between bone resorption and formation becomes compromised by a net loss of bone tissues. Research shows that a daily intake of collagen stimulates osteoblasts, the cells responsible for bone formation.
